Edith MacIntosh Emergency Shelter

In response to the urgent needs in the community, a new emergency shelter for those experiencing unsheltered homelessness is operating at 104 Stirling Avenue, Kitchener (formally Edith MacIntosh Child Care Centre). It provides support to men and gender diverse adults who are 25 and over.
Operated by Services and Housing In the Province (SHIP). SHIP aims to address the issue of homelessness by providing a spectrum of housing options to individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges. It provides services for up to 30 individuals 24 hours, seven days a week.

Background
The number of individuals currently experiencing homelessness in the Region is unprecedented. Similar to many communities across Canada, we are seeing the effects of poverty, mental health issues, rising housing costs and impacts of the opioid crisis, first-hand in our community.
Through system planning and partnerships, Region of Waterloo Housing Services is working to increase capacities across the shelter system to meet occupancy needs.
