Consultation has concluded

The City of Waterloo is upgrading five ball diamonds within Waterloo by 2023.

These upgrades are part of the ongoing implementation of the Outdoor Sportsfield Strategy that was completed in 2012. Our goal is to maximize the capacity of the existing diamonds and better meet the needs of the people visiting and using these diamonds.

For example, adding lighting to the diamonds will allow us to increase scheduling capacity, and better support groups that play in the evening. The updates to infrastructure will ensure greater user programming for the next 20 years.

In 2021, city staff upgraded the two ball diamonds at Hillside Park as follows:

  • Outfield fencing was replaced
  • Backstop fencing was upgraded to a 30’ height and new 10’ spectator screens were provided
  • New safety netting was installed around each diamond to protect patrons and vehicles
  • A new accessible trail was provided between the upper and lower diamond
  • New mesh batting tunnels with artificial turf and a storage building were provided
  • Retaining walls were replaced
  • The parking lot was re-paved and new accessible parking spaces were added
  • Lighting was added to the parking lot

Will the City be investing in an electrical outlet at and for pitching machine like Cherry Park for future upgrades? Much quicker for volunteers to set up, better for environment (no gas) and less noisy for neighbours. Thank you.

RyanM asked over 2 years ago

Thank you for bringing this question to us. At this point an electrical outlet has not been considered. We will bring this idea to our design meeting and see if we can find room in the budget to accommodate an outlet. Thanks again!

Why was only the one parking lot paved?

GRoss asked over 2 years ago

Hi there, thanks for submitting this question.

The lower parking lot was paved too, just not with asphalt but with tar and chip. It really is not used very often - it is more of an overflow parking and so tar and chip is very appropriate and much cheaper.

The tar and chip was selected to allow us to keep within budget and by saving on the lower lot we could put more funding into the diamond upgrades. If we paved that lot with asphalt too, something else would have needed to be cut.

    Thanks!
