Why is the City launching this survey?
The Kaufman Park courts are well used amenities during the warmer months. Organized clubs and individual players play tennis and pickleball, which aren’t optimized for specifically for one sport.
The City is aware that sharing the court space between tennis and pickleball means a compromise of the height of the nets – either too low for tennis or too high for pickleball. While there are dedicated courts for tennis players in Kitchener, there aren’t any dedicated outdoor courts for pickleball.
We want to understand how Kaufman Park can better meet the needs of the community.
How will the survey information be used?
The City of Kitchener is reviewing how sports like tennis, pickleball, basketball and other activities are used on hardcourt surfaces.
The information from the survey will partly inform a future strategy of how to deliver hardcourt amenities that better meet the needs of the community.
How will the decision for Kaufman Park be made?
Information from the survey will be used by staff in informing the lay out of courts at Kaufman Park (and Highland if needed) which will be implemented for the 2021 season. A summary of the feedback received through this engagement will be made available on the Kitchener website in mid-late November.
This consultation has concluded. Staff reviewed the survey results, which show the most preferred option is to maintain the Kaufman Park courts as a shared space, lined for both tennis and pickleball with a fixed net height of 35 inches. Staff also heard that cross wind can be a challenge at Kaufman, so wind nets are being considered for 2021.
