Picture of park improvements at Albert McCormick Community Centre

Albert McCormick Community Centre

Albert McCormick Community Centre has been identified as an excellent location to create opportunities for outdoor active sports close to neighbourhoods with high populations of youth.

The new amenities proposed include a skateboard park, water-splash plaza and a half-court basketball and parking realignments that improve parking, circulation and enable a future increase in parking spaces. The existing facility also provides the needed indoor amenities such as close proximity to the branch library, washroom facilities, water bottle filling stations and more. The new park plans at Albert McCormick Community Centre will make a strong connection to surrounding neighbourhoods and existing parkland, particularly the planned improvements for Heasley Park.

Heasley Park

We have been working hard to make improvements to this park as well. Some of the work completed to date includes:

  • Drainage culvert installed under the trails near Parkside Dr
  • Overgrown vegetation cleared along the paths and bridges to improve visibility and safety
  • Filled in low areas in lawn to make the park more useable

The following improvements were proposed:

  • Relocate the memorial stone for Jimmy Stanley to a more visible location
  • Install new benches within the park
  • Pave the path between Cedarbrae Avenue and Parkside Drive with asphalt
  • Install infrastructure for potential future lighting along the path
  • Create a new path from the southern bridge to Parkside Drive that runs alongside the tennis courts
  • Potentially convert one tennis court to basketball or pickleball

Based on these proposals, the following improvements have been made:

  • The memorial stone for Jimmy Stanley was relocated adjacent the main path with a bench placed nearby
  • A total of three new benches were installed
  • The existing paths were resurfaced in asphalt
  • Infrastructure for lighting was not installed at this time
  • The new path between the bridge and Parkside Drive will be installed later this year
  • One tennis court was converted to a basketball court
