Share your thoughts on MCCC public art proposals
The Mill-Courtland Community Center (MCCC) expansion project is eligible for a public art commission via the City’s 1% policy. To select a new artwork, the City’s Arts & Creative Industries team is managing an open call competition.
In spring 2024, we invited expressions of interest from local artists. Preferences and criteria in the open call included:
- artists or teams with experience creating site-specific or participatory public artworks
- ideas responding to a theme of ‘togetherness’ to align with MCCC community values
- artistic merit of a proposed concept to enhance or activate public space at MCCC
- appropriateness of the scale, visibility and/or presence of a proposed artwork
- general technical feasibility (durability, assembly, safety, accessibility)
A jury narrowed down the applications to two options from a total of 11 submissions to the open call. That jury includes:
- MCCC staff
- a representative from the MCCC neighbourhood association
- the facility expansion’s architect
- a member of Kitchener City Council
- a representative from the Kitchener Public Art Working Group
- two local professional artists
Now we want to hear from MCCC neighbours and visitors about those two options. Share your feedback and help the jury make their final selection. The survey is open until Jan. 26, 2025.
