A walk in Eden

Inspiration can be taken from a number of concepts in the design of 'The Line' (being created in Saudi Arabia -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kz5vEqdaSc&ab_channel=NEOM):

  • High levels of automation including transportation, delivery, city services etc
  • High levels of digitization. Eliminate the physical as much as possible and move things to the cloud.
  • Free public transport, also fully automated and fast. Minimize and ideally eliminate personal car ownership.
  • Go for 5-10 min neighborhoods where walking/biking/escooters are the primary mode of moving around. Integrate this with a gradual reduction of the current road network to favor trails instead.
  • Heavy increase in greenery. It should be a mix of grass fields and dense forests.
  • Waterloo Region is known for its tech industry but you don't see the application of new tech at a city level that much. I would want this to be part of the plan where cutting-edge technology is deployed even if only for testing and experimenting. Invite tech companies to introduce their latest products to the city residents in their day to day life. Google is already in town as an example.
  • Encourage remote work (if the concept of work still exists in 20 yrs) and minimize office space and parking lots as much as possible. Use that space for housing and public spaces e.g. parks, green areas etc.
