Welcome to the 82 Wilson EngageWR page! Thank you for your interest in this new affordable housing project planned for the City of Kitchener. This project will help reduce the wait list of people who need housing in this neighbourhood and it will provide an opportunity to expand services for existing and new tenants.

In 2019, Regional Council approved the Waterloo Region Housing (WRH) Master Plan (see Council report: Addendum Community Services Committee Agenda - November 5, 2019 (regionofwaterloo.ca)). An outcome of the Master Plan was the creation of a WRH revitalization strategy for existing WRH properties. The strategy involved evaluating all 65 WRH sites to determine which have the most potential for redevelopment based on site assessments. The five sites recommended for redevelopment have relatively high community housing waiting lists, which would be reduced with revitalization. Also, there are several existing services available at these sites which can be expanded as part of the revitalization through community-based needs. The combination of selected sites ensures that affordable units are developed on the central transit corridor and meet the needs of each of the three cities.

82 Wilson was one of the recommended properties for revitalization. The site is located next to two WRH properties (84 Wilson and 210 Fourth) and is close to transit and many community amenities. The new building, will contain 48 one-bedroom units that will serve seniors in the community.

This project will make a huge difference in the lives of many people waiting for an affordable home. It is urgently needed and is supported by the City of Kitchener and the Region of Waterloo.

  • Tender for builder awarded

    On Wednesday, August 30 Regional Council approved the tender for a new affordable housing build at 82 Wilson Ave. in Kitchener. The tender was awarded to Melloul-Blamey Construction Inc., a construction company based in Waterloo. Neighbours of the property will begin to see activity taking place as construction gets underway in late September.

    Your community is moving closer to providing a home for individuals and families anxiously waiting for affordable housing.

    A new affordable housing development is coming to 82 Wilson Avenue. The new 48 unit building will be home to seniors living in Waterloo Region. Design of the new building is well underway and we are inviting you to learn how these homes will be built in your community. We are looking forward to hearing your feedback and questions around how these new homes will enhance your neighbourhood and the broader community.

  • Demolition of the existing building

    On Tuesday May 17, demolition of the existing vacant building at 82 Wilson will begin. This is the first step in creating 48 new affordable homes for seniors living in Waterloo Region. The work will continue until June 21. There will be no traffic impacts to nearby streets, all of the work will be contained to the site.
