Region of Waterloo - Cutting edge of innovation

by sah, 11 May 2019

The Region of Waterloo is known as a tech center and student hub. However, there isn't too much going on at the city and resident level which would be considered impressive from an 'adopting innovation' perspective. I would love to see this region pushing cutting edge technology/ideas into the mainstream by collaborating with industries and promoting pilot projects to be launched in our cities. There are lots of revolutionary ideas in development around the world (e.g. in the areas of autonomous cars, renewable energy adoption etc) and all of that has to be brought to RoW. I want to see this Region become the place where people come and are amazed at seeing the rapid advancements (which they might not even have heard of before!) implemented and running on the ground.

Just came across this and thought I'd post it as a pilot project RoW should have running in the cities! http://www.ridewithela.ca/ . Similarly, Transdev shuttle in Montreal: http://transdev.ca/about/news/av-shuttle-pilot/

I agree! It would be cool to see city pride and investment in homegrown innovation.

The region needs to set up it's own gigabit fiber network. With the world becoming more connected through the internet and the provincial government requiring students to take online courses there needs to be a municipal owned network. I believe this would help low income families become more connected by being able to access a lower cost but not lower quality option similar to low income housing.
