We are developing a new plan for the stewardship and ecological restoration of the Huron Natural Area.

Huron Natural Area is one of the largest natural spaces in the city. It has more than 250 acres of protected forest and wetland. It is home to many different plants and animal species, which supports vital biodiversity in our city.

It's also an important place to many people. You can walk, play, and enjoy nature here. It offers unique opportunities for education, research, and recreation jobs, and is an especially significant place for Indigenous communities.

We’ll work together with community members to create a plan for the future of Huron Natural Area. Together we will:

  • build a shared vision
  • protect the natural environment
  • respect Indigenous rights and interests
  • meet community needs
  • look at how often people visit and what nature-based activities they enjoy

We are also working with local Indigenous communities to support the creation of Indigenous placemaking in the park.

The Huron Natural Area Stewardship Plan (HNASP) will include plans for:

  • how community members can get involved
  • collecting information about the land, plants, and animals
  • what needs to be done to care for the area
  • future directions

We are working with Indigenous communities and organizations to ensure their voices, values, and knowledge guide the future of the Huron Natural Area.

Indigenous knowledge is deeply rooted in relationships with the land, water, plants, and animals. It offers holistic ways of understanding nature, emphasizing balance, respect, and responsibility. When combined with Western science, it leads to stronger, more inclusive environmental stewardship.

Explore how the City is blending Indigenous and Western ecological knowledge to care for Huron Natural Area. Then share your thoughts on opportunities and challenges for the stewardship plan.

Help us steward and restore the area with iNaturalist!

To effectively steward and restore this area we are gathering data to understand the current conditions of the flora (plant life) and fauna (animals) using iNaturalist.

Create a free account, then take and upload images of any flora and fauna you see in the Huron Natural Area. They will be automatically added to our data base for the area. To see all the photos, visit our project Huron Natural Area Stewardship.
