What is the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS)?

The Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) is a new way of handling 9-1-1 medical calls to make sure people with the most urgent needs get help first. It helps paramedics respond faster and return to service quickly, so they’re ready for the next emergency. MPDS is already used in many parts of Ontario and around the world. Starting December 4th, 2025, it will be part of our local system too. This change is part of Ontario’s Your Health plan, which aims to make sure people get the right care at the right time and reduce pressure on hospital emergency rooms. The Ministry of Health operates the Central Ambulance Communications Centres (CACC) in Ontario. The Cambridge CACC locally is responsible for dispatching paramedics to 9-1-1 calls.

What does this mean for those who call 9-1-1?

If you or someone else is experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency, such as:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking, and/or dizziness
  • Sudden, severe headache or blurred vision
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • Severe bleeding
  • Serious injury or trauma

Call 9-1-1 immediately. When you call, be ready to give clear details about the person’s condition and exact location. This helps paramedics respond quickly and effectively. With the MPDS, people in the region calling 9-1-1 can expect more detailed questions from Ambulance Communications Officers. These questions help emergency personnel gather specific information about a patient’s condition to make quick and effective dispatch decisions.

For non-life-threatening issues, you may experience longer wait times when paramedic resources are in high demand. Ambulance Communications Officers will monitor calls which are delayed, calling back to check in on the person's condition. If the person's condition changes, please call 9-1-1 again and update them. The Ambulance Communications Officer will reprioritize the call based on the new information received.
