Growing Child Care Equitably

Growing Child Care Equitably

Children’s Services is working alongside community partners to create more child care spaces where it is needed most. Our efforts include expanding affordable access to child care through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) program and collaborating with community partners to create culturally responsive child care and other child care options to support families who have the greatest barriers to accessing child care.

In collaboration with Family and Children's Services and KW Habilitation, a limited number of child care spaces have been reserved for families in crisis, helping the families to address other urgent life matters while their children are receiving high quality child care. To date, 34 children have been placed into child care, with 19 additional spaces expected by Fall 2025.

Supporting Healthy Communities

Supporting Healthy Communities

This year, the Region of Waterloo Public Health has worked alongside community to foster a safer, healthier environment by empowering youth, addressing substance abuse, and effectively managing infectious disease risks.

Recent Progress

Through public education campaigns and direct communication with caregivers, student vaccination rates increased from about 81% in October 2024 to over 93% in July 2025. 19,467 student vaccine records were updated (including both those who reported records and those who received vaccinations). Vaccination protects children from many serious diseases that are easily spread in schools and child care settings.

During this year’s construction season, residents were more informed than ever before.

  • Our new texting program gives residents the opportunity to get real-time updates on their phones – just text a construction project’s unique code to 57555. These project codes will be on signs at the work site and on the project webpages found on the Region’s website.
  • On our new construction webpages you’ll find a new interactive map of active and future projects. Every active project has a page with clear, up-to-date information. There’s also a news feed with all the latest construction notices and updates.
