Albert McCormick Community Centre and WPL McCormick Renovation Project

Council approved reports in May 2025 related to the Albert McCormick Community Centre (AMCC) Renovation, Expansion and Energy Accessibility Retrofit Project and the AMCC Sportsplex and WPL McCormick Branch Library Renovation Project. The project will be completed in two phases.

Phase 1
The energy and accessibility retrofit project supported by a $2.4 million grant from the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, supports the goals of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving accessibility within the facility. The project includes the removal of the central skylight assembly above the west ice rink, upgrades to interior doors and windows to reduce heat gain, condensation, and fogging issues, new automatic sliding door assemblies to provide easier access to the building, and the transformation of existing washrooms to include a fully accessible universal washroom with ceiling lift, adult change table and shower, and 12 single-use gender-neutral washrooms (two of which will be barrier-free). Two single-use gender-neutral changerooms will also be added.

Phase 2
The sportsplex and library renovation project includes expansions to the existing community centre and McCormick Branch Library, with an updated exterior entrance and a fully accessible connection between the arena, the library and the new community room. The new community room will be a flexible, multi-purposed space with sports flooring, a basketball net, and other elements to support active programming. The renovation will also include a full commercial kitchen to support local food service delivery and programming, and inclusive spaces including a sensory room, feeding room and spiritual room. The current McCormick Branch Library will be renovated and expanded, including a dedicated programming room, quiet study rooms, and a makerspace.
