This project is complete and the park is now open for use. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the redesign of thepark. If you have any questions, please contact the Parks division at parks@kitchener.ca or 519-741-2345 (TTY:1-866-969-9994).

Alpine Park is an existing park in the Alpine neighbourhood that has a small wooded area, play equipment and is linked by a trail network to two adjacent school properties. The wooded area is an incredible asset to this park space and a focal point within the neighbourhood. Consultants from SHIFT Landscape Architecture have been engaged to lead the redevelopment of this park including conceptual design, final design, through to construction completion.

Thank you once again for your feedback on the Alpine Park concepts. The project team is working on the final design and will share it on Engage when ready.

Through our ongoing review of park improvement processes, we’ve identified the need for some additional site investigation before we can start construction. Two things are planned:

The first is an archaeological assessment of Alpine Park, which includes drilling in the park. Drilling is scheduled this spring and will take about two days. The archaeology consultant will then write a report. The City of Kitchener and First Nations rights holders will review the report. We will then submit the final report to the Ministry of Heritage Sport Tourism and Culture for approval.

The second is geotechnical fieldwork to inform the construction. This also includes drilling. The geotechnical fieldwork can only happen after we receive approval from the Ministry. We do not know yet when we can schedule this fieldwork.

Access to some park features may be affected at points during both the archaeological and geotechnical fieldwork days.

The impact of all this on the construction timeline is significant, but we will keep you updated as work unfolds.

Through the summer of 2021, the design team sought input about how Alpine Park is currently used as well as how the park can support the community into the future. A summary of that engagement can be found here.

Based on this initial input, two preliminary conceptual designs were developed for Alpine Park:

Please share your input using the short survey on this page. The design team will also be monitoring the “Ideas” tool, so please share your thoughts, ask questions, make comments to help shape the future of Alpine Park.

Have a question or want more information? On November 23, we will be hosting an online presentation and forum. Please register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcoduqgqjkpH9DnWq4vm3fK8wAHpBVJzdDu. Please note that you must register to reserve your spot. We have updated the home page for the project. If you are looking for information that was up here previously, you can find it below:

Alpine Park is an existing park space in the Alpine neighbourhood that has a small wooded area, play equipment and is linked to both a trail network and two adjacent school properties. The wooded area is an incredible asset to this park space and a focal point within the neighbourhood. Through this project, it is anticipated that updates to the existing park space will be explored along with the addition of a formal trail through the woods to mitigate impacts from over-use.

As part of this park renewal project, some potential opportunities could include new play features, accessibility upgrades, tree management in the woodlot, and better connections to the existing trail network and school areas, including the baseball diamond. There has also been shown interest in a community garden space and permanent cooking area/barbecue.

The project team is currently seeking input on how the Alpine Park space is currently used as well as how the park could better support the community into the future. We need your input to help inform the process and generate design ideas. Below and in the links to the right, please find an existing conditions plan of the park along with some recent site photographs for your reference. We also encourage you to fill out the “Ideas” board below with any thoughts or ideas for the park space.

Have a question? We know people are tired of virtual meetings but are perhaps not yet comfortable with in person events, so we're doing this consultation a different way. From August 3 to 6 we will host an online forum right here on this page. The project team will be closely monitoring this forum during business hours that week, answering your questions in real time. Visit this page anytime that week to ask questions, make comments and learn more about the Alpine Park project.
