We are updating the policy that guides the City of Kitchener’s annual Athletic Awards. This update will help ensure the policy reflects our community’s values and goals. It is also a chance to improve how and when the awards event is held.

We are gathering input from the Mayor and Council, City staff, past event attendees, and both affiliated and unaffiliated local sports groups. Help shape how we recognize athletic excellence in Kitchener!

The Sports Award Banquet Policy (GOV-COU-045) outlines how the annual awards banquet is planned and delivered. It includes:

  • Who is on the planning committee and what they do
  • The criteria for selecting award recipients
  • Key dates for nominations and the banquet

The policy has not had a full update since 1992. We have also heard some concerns, such as:

  • The criteria are no longer appropriate, so some achievements may go unrecognized
  • Hosting the event in March can make it hard for people to attend due to unpredictable weather

Your responses will help us make these changes to the policy:

  • Improve the nomination criteria so more local achievements can be recognized
  • Hold the event during a time of year that is easier for people to attend
  • Adjust the nomination timeline to match the new event date

We are also asking for your ideas to improve the event itself, including:

  • Where it is held
  • What the program includes
  • The type of award given

We especially want to hear from:

  • People who have attended the Athletic Awards in the past
  • Local sports groups, whether they are affiliated with the City or not

The best way to share your thoughts is through our online survey.
