Sod placement and restoration update

September 25, 2026

Restoration work and sod placement is now underway for the Connaught Street reconstruction project. This work is part of the Council-approved Capital Budget to renew aging city roads, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, watermains, and sidewalk for current and future needs. The general contractor for this project is Musselman Excavating.

Please take note of this letter’s date. Residents will receive another update when the sod warranty period ends and responsibility for ongoing maintenance is transferred to property owners.

What to expect

Work hours

Construction activities may take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Weekend work is not expected but may occasionally be required. Approved weekend work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Restoration

Areas affected by construction will be restored with sod, concrete, and/or asphalt where needed.

If interlocking brick, flagstone, or similar surface materials were removed during construction, they will be replaced.

Sod warranty period

Sod warranty period ends: April 27, 2027

For the first 60 days after sod is installed, the contractor is responsible for:

  • Installing topsoil and sod
  • Rolling the sod after installation
  • Watering the sod
  • Completing the first grass cut within 14 days of installation

The project team will inspect the sod before the warranty period ends.

Contractor watering truck

The contractor will use a watering truck to maintain newly installed sod during the warranty period.

Parked vehicles can make it difficult for the watering truck to reach boulevard areas. Residents are encouraged to limit on-street parking when possible after sod has been installed.

Winter warranty pause

If sod is installed late in the season, the 60-day warranty period is paused between November 15 and April 15 while the sod is dormant during the winter.

The warranty period resumes after April 15. The warranty end date shown above already accounts for this pause.

Resident watering

Residents and property owners are encouraged to continue watering newly installed sod during and after the warranty period, while following the Region of Waterloo Water Conservation By-law.

Regular watering helps the sod develop a healthy root system and improves its chances of long-term success.

Lawn mowing and grass cutting

After the contractor completes the first cut, ongoing lawn maintenance becomes the responsibility of the resident, property owner, or business owner.

Please maintain the grass at a height of approximately 75 mm (3 inches).

Keeping mower blades set higher can help new sod establish more successfully and better withstand hot weather during the first few seasons.

Cutting the grass shorter than 75 mm may void the sod warranty.

Fertilizer, aeration and overseeding

In spring 2027, the contractor will fertilize, aerate, and overseed newly sodded areas to help establish healthy turf growth.

Sod inspection and handover

The City will inspect the condition of the sod at the end of the warranty period.

The contractor will replace any damaged or unhealthy sod identified during the inspection.

Once any required repairs have been completed, responsibility for maintaining the sod will transfer to the resident, property owner, or business owner.
