Thank you

The last night of operation at the Edith MacIntosh Emergency Shelter was Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

From June 24 to September 28, 2022, we provided 97 nights of safe accommodation at the Edith MacIntosh Emergency Shelter for 55 individuals who had nowhere else to go.

Many thanks to the Cameron Heights Collegiate administration, staff, students and families, the Waterloo Region District School Board, the City of Kitchener and the many local community organizations and partners who supported the work at this site and made this all possible.

A special thanks to our service provider, The Working Centre. When faced with a challenge, The Working Centre stepped up and agreed to take this on. For this, we thank you.

We are very excited to be moving forward with our new emergency shelter location at 1668 King St East, Kitchener whose first night of operation is September 29, 2022. While the Edith MacIntosh site delivered as a small temporary shelter, the King Street location has many improvements. It has a larger facility space that can provide better support to more individuals who need it, a longer period of availability (18 – 24 months) and is close to support services and transit.

The King Street site provides an urgently needed emergency shelter location as we work to respond to the homelessness crisis in our community. More information on the King Street Shelter is available here - www.engagewr.ca/king-street-shelter.

Our work is not ending here. The King Street site is just one part of an interim response as we work on longer-term solutions. Visit our Interim Housing Solutions page to learn more.
