What to expect during surface work construction

Work hours

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Weekend work may occasionally be required and is pre-approved for Saturdays and Sundays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Driveway access during surface work

The contractor estimates that driveway access may be unavailable for approximately 3 to 5 weeks while concrete curbs and gutters, sidewalks, driveway ramps, and asphalt paving are completed.

The duration of driveway closures depends on several factors, including:

  • Time required for crews to complete the work
  • Time required for concrete to cure properly
  • Subcontractor scheduling
  • Weather and other unforeseen conditions

Road and sidewalk access

To complete the work safely, temporary road and sidewalk restrictions will be in place throughout the construction area. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Where needed, the contractor may install temporary wood plank bridges over newly poured sidewalks to maintain pedestrian access to properties.

Driveway access and temporary parking permits

The contractor will notify residents of any temporary driveway access restrictions. There will be periods when access is not possible due to the nature of the work.

Temporary parking permits will be provided to residents affected by construction. These permits allow parking longer than three hours and overnight on designated nearby streets.

  • Permits must be displayed on the vehicle dashboard.
  • Typically, two permits are provided per property.
  • Additional permits may be requested through the Site Inspector.

Residents should ensure vehicles are parked only in permitted areas and do not interfere with construction activities. The City's Bylaw Enforcement team is aware of construction-related parking impacts; however, parking and safety regulations will continue to be enforced.

Accessible accommodation

The contractor is required to maintain safe and accessible walkways and entrances throughout construction. Any temporary access disruptions will be communicated as soon as possible.

Residents with specific accessibility needs, such as level-entry requirements or longer notice periods, should contact the Project Manager to make arrangements.

On-site communication

Contractors may need to communicate directly with residents regarding driveway access, utility interruptions, inspections, or restoration activities.

Contractor staff will be identifiable by high-visibility company-branded clothing. If you need assistance on site, please ask to speak with the Site Inspector.

Garbage and recycling

Please place garbage, recycling, and green bin materials at the curb before 7 a.m. on collection day.

If necessary, the contractor will move bins to an appropriate location for collection and return them afterward. Please ensure all bins are clearly labelled with your address.

Restoration

Construction areas will be restored with sod, concrete, and/or asphalt as required.

Interlocking brick, flagstone, and similar surface features removed during construction will be reinstated. Additional information regarding sod installation will be provided once restoration work begins.

Parking

On-street parking within the active construction zone will not be permitted, as the space is required for equipment and materials.

Vehicles that interfere with construction operations may be relocated at no cost to the owner.

For parking enforcement inquiries, please call 519-741-2345.

Moving, deliveries and service access

The project team will make reasonable efforts to accommodate move-ins, move-outs, and deliveries during construction.

If you are expecting a delivery or require special access arrangements, please contact the Site Inspector in advance.
