As part of a broader initiative linked to the nearby TEK Tower development at 30 Francis Street, we are redesigning Francis Green to better serve the growing downtown community. The renewal project will create a vibrant, welcoming space that celebrates our industrial heritage – and offers vibrant spaces for play and gathering. We are seeking resident feedback on the concept designs, to help ensure the redesigned park meets our community’s needs.

At just 2,000 square meters, Francis Green is a small but cherished urban park located at the corner of King Street West and Francis Street South in downtown Kitchener. It’s one of the few remaining green spaces in the city’s core where residents and visitors can pause, relax, and connect with nature. The park currently features a mix of paved areas, greenery, and seating, along with a unique collection of five restored industrial artifacts that celebrate Kitchener’s manufacturing heritage and its legacy of innovation.

The new concept designs draw inspiration from:

  • Previous engagement for Places and Spaces, such as the King Street Pop-up Park, and the Victoria Park Master Plan.
  • Input from the Downtown Working Group and technical site assessments.
  • The established downtown design palette seen at Vogelsang Green and Oktoberfest Platz.

Together, these elements will guide the creation of a refreshed Francis Green – a space that honors Kitchener’s history while meeting the needs of a dynamic, growing downtown.

You have an important perspective on how public spaces should feel and function. By sharing ideas and feedback, you can help ensure Francis Green becomes a place that truly serves the community – whether that means more seating, improved landscaping, or features that make the park inviting for all ages.

Community input will help shape the park’s final design. Feedback gathered during the consultation will guide decisions about layout, amenities, and overall character. The final concept will reflect what residents value most.
