Project overview
The Region of Waterloo is planning improvements to the Hartman Bridge located on Huron Street (Regional Road 4) between Waterloo Street and Union Street in the Town of New Hamburg, Township of Wilmot
Built in 1936, the Hartman Bridge is the last remaining steel truss bridge on the Region’s road network. The bridge carries one lane of traffic in each direction and includes separate pathways for people walking and cycling on both sides.
The bridge was named after the Hartman family, who owned the land on the opposite side of the river and donated land for its construction. It is an important landmark in downtown New Hamburg and is included in the New Hamburg Heritage Conservation District.
The bridge is at a stage in its lifecycle where its main structural components need to be assessed to determine whether rehabilitation or replacement is needed.
The Region has completed several repairs and rehabilitation projects to help maintain the bridge, including a major rehabilitation in 2006, deck replacement and a new driving surface in 2019, and additional deck repairs in 2025.
Future improvements will consider the bridge’s condition, safety, transportation needs and heritage value while helping preserve this important community landmark.
