New ways to stay informed and share feedback

September 1, 2026

We've launched a new Engage Kitchener project page to provide a central place for residents to learn about the Downtown Fire Station and Housing Development project, stay informed about upcoming construction activities, and receive project updates as work progresses.

The page will include project information, timelines, updates, frequently asked questions, and opportunities to ask questions and share feedback.

What's happening now?

The project has received Council approval and is now advancing through detailed design, permitting, and site plan review. This phase focuses on refining project details and preparing for construction.

The Fire Station 8 component is moving forward, while the housing component continues to be advanced in partnership with Kitchener Housing Inc.

Current work includes:

  • Final approvals and permitting activities
  • Funding applications and financing activities
  • Site mobilization for early works
  • Utility connections and site servicing preparation
  • Resident communications regarding upcoming construction activities

Residents may notice increased activity around the site as contractors begin preparing for construction.

Previous community input

Community input played an important role in the planning and approval process for this project. Engagement activities completed to date include:

  • Notice provided to 831 households
  • Meetings with the King East Neighbourhood Association (KENA)
  • A public open house
  • A virtual neighbourhood meeting
  • Public submissions and staff responses
  • Statutory consultation required through the Planning Act

Residents raised questions and concerns about topics including building height, affordability, parking, traffic, trees, noise, transparency, park space, and public art. These comments and staff responses are summarized in the development application staff reports.

For more information, visit the development application page and review the related staff report.

Future opportunities

As the project moves into detailed design, site preparation, and construction, there will be other engagement opportunities as well. Your feedback will help inform project communications, customer support, public art development, and select urban plaza elements.

The overall project scope, building form, site layout, and other approved project components are not open for further public decision-making.

Stay informed

We encourage residents to follow this page for future updates, construction notices, and opportunities to learn more about the project and participate in upcoming public art and urban plaza engagement activities.
