Road closure begins September 14

September 7, 2026

The City of Kitchener is making progress on the mixed-use facility at 450-470 King Street, a project that will combine a new municipal fire station (Fire Station 8) with rental housing in partnership with Kitchener Housing Inc.

The next phase of the project will prepare the site for future construction. Residents may notice activity related to environmental site preparation, grading, underground servicing, utility work, excavation and shoring activities.

Site preparation work is expected to begin September 14, 2026 and continue until about December 2026. Foundation work is anticipated to begin in spring 2027.

What to expect during construction

Work hours

Work is expected to take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Occasionally, weekend work may be required between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Road and sidewalk access

King Street East will be closed at Cameron Street South and Madison Avenue North from September 17 to October 2, 2026.

Madison Avenue North will experience closures during periods between October 5 to October 14, 2026.

Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists should follow all posted signs and directions.

Driveway access

We do not expect access to residential driveways to be affected. If temporary access restrictions are needed, affected residents will be notified in advance. If you require accessibility accommodations, please contact the project team below.

Construction noise, vibration and dust

Construction equipment will create noise, occasional vibration, and dust in the air. Equipment may include excavators, dump trucks, generators, compressors, paving equipment, and other machinery.

On-site communication

If construction affects access to neighbouring properties or causes disruptions, we'll let affected residents know in advance whenever possible.

Accessible accommodation

The City's contractor must ensure safe and accessible walkways and entryways are maintained for everyone during construction. Any temporary access disruptions will be communicated as soon as possible. If you experience a disruption, have a specific access need, or a related accommodation request, contact the person listed below.

Residents who require accommodation (examples: for level entry, longer notice) must contact the Project Manager to arrange for access during the construction period.

Parking

This project will affect on-street parking. Parking in the active work zone is not permitted as space is needed for construction equipment and materials. If your parked vehicle affects construction work, it will be relocated without charge to the owner.

If you require parking enforcement, please contact 519-741-2345.

Traffic management

We'll work to keep traffic moving during construction and reduce disruptions where possible. Neighbours may experience temporary delays and increased construction vehicle traffic. Traffic signs and safety measures will be in place throughout construction.

GRT service

We do not expect construction to affect transit service. If service changes are needed, GRT will notify riders in advance and provide updated route information. For the latest schedules and travel information, visit www.grt.ca.

Moving in/out and deliveries

Efforts will be made to accommodate properties that have scheduled move-ins / move-outs and deliveries. Please contact the site inspector in advance to advise of any delivery access.

Garbage and recycling

Please have materials placed at curbside before 7 a.m. on your collection day. If required, the contractor will move bins to an appropriate location and return them in reasonable amount of time. Please ensure that you label your bins with your address.

Site superintendent

If you have construction questions or an issue onsite, we ask that you be directed to the site superintendent. The site superintendent is onsite daily and can be identified by the white hardhat they wear with the contracting company logo on it.
