The Kitchener Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is one of 13 wastewater treatment plants in Waterloo Region. A wastewater treatment plant has many different processes to treat water before it is released back into the environment. We've been making upgrades to the Kitchener Wastewater Treatment Plant since 2010 to improve the efficiency and the water quality entering the Grand River. Learn about the benefits of the Grand River.

Current plant improvements

Demolition — April–December 2023
We have demolition work being done at the northwest area of the plant between April and December of this year, to remove equipment and tanks that are no longer needed. This work is required for the safety of those at the plant and to prepare the site for future improvements. This work is a continuation of the overall plant upgrades that were identified through the 2012 Class Environmental Assessment Study.

Project information
We have contracted T. Musselman Excavating Limited (TME) to complete this work, which will include:

  • Removal of soil piles from the site
  • Decommissioning of facilities that are no longer in use
  • Partial and full demolition of six structures (see the image)
  • Replacement of aging watermains
  • Restoration of all areas affected by the demolition activities

Working Hours
The contractor has started to set up equipment and prepare the site for the project. Their standard working hours for this project will be Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work outside of these times may periodically be required to complete the project. Our priority is to keep the work within these hours whenever possible.

Thanks for your patience
We understand this work may cause disruptions to the neighbouring residents. Our best efforts will be made to minimize disruptions where possible, while still ensuring the work can be completed efficiently and cost-effectively. We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

December 2023 Update
On December 11th, the contractor will commence importing 200m3 of clean fill, marking the crucial final phase of the project for the complete restoration of the disused aeration tank. This process is anticipated to span approximately 10 days. The material will be transported to the site via dump trucks, resulting in a temporary increase in traffic in the vicinity of the plant.
