Progress update on Kitchener Utilities clean energy transition

May 20, 2026

We are working on understanding our options as we prepare for the ways our energy system could change in the coming decades. Here’s what’s happening.

We are working our way through a list of potential business activities

  • We recently looked at renewable natural gas, hydrogen, and solar generation. Right now, we’re working to understand our options related to energy and equipment services, heat energy options in new neighbourhoods, and how we can support people as things change in our energy systems.
  • We are also looking at how we approach gas rates and the way we manage our assets. This spring, we will look at potential business cases for thermal energy options and determine approaches for renewable natural gas.
  • Staff teams are at work to support, and we are expecting reports from our consultants on the remaining activities later in 2026, which will be reviewed by staff and City leadership.

Next, we’ll build an integrated approach

  • As we learn more about these opportunities, we will need to bring different parts together in a way that will work. This integrated approach will form the basis of our strategy, which will guide our energy businesses over the next several decades.

We are building tools to guide those decisions

  • Scenarios will show how energy use and emissions could change, so we can look at what it might mean for Kitchener Utilities.
  • A financial tool will help us check if ideas can work financially.
  • Another tool will help us make sure plans fit our guiding principles and objectives so we can meet our business, customer, and community goals, make sure we are prepared for how the ways we use energy might change.
