Introduction:
The City is adding lighting to established multi-use trails to improve safety and security as well as enhance user experience while travelling on trails outside of daylight hours. Follow this page for updates on priority trail projects.
The City studied the primary trail network and developed criteria to help prioritize the trails that would include lighting. The criteria included trail volume; proximity to transit and LRT stations; schools; shopping; recreation centres; and employment zones.
Annual funding has been allocated to this important program and staff will prioritize adding lighting to trails that rate highest based on the criteria and available budget. Not all trails will have lighting such as recreational trails where lighting could impact the experience of the trail and the surrounding environment.
Priority Projects:
The following projects are the current priorities developed from the study:
Kingscourt Park multi-use trail
The City will install pedestrian scaled lighting along the multi-use trail (MUT) in Kingscourt Park. This trail provides an important connection for active users to and from Conestoga Mall, the GRT main bus terminal and the LRT station on King Street.
The park has two trails linking Kingscourt Drive. The north MUT has recently been upgraded with asphalt to enhance accessibility and is the subject MUT where the pedestrian scale lighting will be installed. The City is also improving the lighting on the network to the east, at the two walkways between Kingscourt Park and Scotchmere Crt. Our intent is to guide trail users to Kingscourt Park and provide a sense of safety while using the walkways at night.
The following figure illustrates the project reach.

Bauer Place multi-use path
The City will be upgrading the existing streetlights and adding additional light fixtures to improve the lighting levels along the walkway from King St N to Bauer Pl., and the multi-use path on Bauer Place up to the intersection with Dotzert Crt.
This route provides an important connection for active users to and from Conestoga Mall, the GRT main bus terminal, the LRT station on King Street and the broader active network.
The City has been in contact with Enova Power to complete this project, November 2026.
