Notice of reconstruction

23 January 2026

The City of Waterloo has approved the reconstruction of Longwood Drive. Construction is scheduled to start in the Spring of 2027. The City of Waterloo has selected R.J. Burnside & Associates to provide design and contract administration services for the reconstruction project. The map below shows the approximate limits of reconstruction.

As part of the reconstruction, all underground municipal infrastructure will be replaced up to the common property line including:

  • Sanitary sewer
  • Storm sewer
  • Watermain
  • Sanitary and water services
  • Concrete curbs and gutters
  • Sidewalks
  • Pavement

Surface works will include new sidewalks, pavement, and concrete curbs and gutters.

Areas affected by construction, such as walkways, driveways and grassed areas, will be restored to City standards. The standard for boulevards and public property is topsoil and sod.

R.J. Burnside will have a topographic surveyor in the area in the coming weeks and months to collect topographic information needed in design. The survey will include the frontage of your property and the street. This survey will collect data on surface elevation and find features such as trees, gardens, steps, walkways, and more for study and design. Certain portions of the survey may be completed over the coming weeks, as conditions allow. The remainder of the surveying will be completed in the spring once all snow has melted. The surveyors won't be disruptive and will identify themselves if you have questions.

The City will provide various notices and updates before and during construction. Before construction, we will invite residents to two in-person public information sessions. The first meeting will provide information on the proposed design. The second will give more details about the construction and a chance to meet the contractor.

The City will make efforts to minimize the disruption to your day-to-day activities. Still, significant reconstruction projects such as this will inevitably result in disruptions. Please note the following important information at this stage:

  • Notify the City’s Project Manager if you have any mobility challenges

During construction, driveway access is generally unavailable during working hours (7am to 7pm). Sidewalks will be maintained to the extent achievable when driveway access is unavailable. Yet, there will be times when even sidewalk access is affected. Knowing any existing challenges in advance will help plan for specific needs.

  • Hold off replacing driveways or walkways

Construction will remove the ends of driveways and walkways and patch them at the end of the project. If possible, wait until construction is complete before repairing driveways and walkways. This prevents the need to cut into new pavement.

We appreciate your time, interest and cooperation in this project. Please contact us with further questions, comments or concerns.
