A great place to skate!

When I first moved to Canada almost fifteen years ago, I lived in Galt. I really wanted to play hockey, but I was extremely inexperienced at ice skating. I would go to the open skate at Galt Arena Gardens on weekdays sometimes and practice skating. It was great because there weren't a lot of people. I would put my loonies in the self-pay box and head out to practice stopping and crossovers. I would skate from one end to the other and stop on each of the lines. Then I would practice crossovers around the center logo to the sounds of the country music that the arena staff played on the loudspeakers. I improved quickly! I can honestly say that Galt Arena Gardens is where I learned to skate, and now hockey is a huge part of my life. I had always been a Detroit Red Wings fan, so I loved seeing the Gordie Howe and Kirk Maltby memorabilia in the concourse. I also remember when I met Gordie Howe a few years ago. I told him I went skating often at Galt Arena Gardens and he looked thoughtful for a moment and said with a smile, "Oh, they have a huge picture of me hanging up there, eh?"
