The Northdale neighbourhood is located between Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, in an area bounded by University Avenue West, Phillip Street, Columbia Street West and King Street North. In 2012, the city developed a Northdale land use and community improvement plan study. The goal of this study is to revitalize the area into a vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood. With this in mind, the city has completed the design of two new smaller park spaces- parkettes- in Northdale neighbourhood.

Sunview and Hemlock parkettes

Sunview Parkette is located at Sunview Street and Hickory Street West. Hemlock Parkette is located at Hemlock Street West and Hickory Street West. These spaces will have an elevated urban design feel and allow for a variety of passive activities such as informal gatherings, potential for small event programming, work and study space, and open green space. The spaces integrate recommendations from previous plans and studies for the Northdale area and reflect the city's reputation as a centre for innovation and inventiveness. Most importantly, these small park spaces, known as parkettes, are inviting, safe and reflective of the community needs and priorities.

Here are the final designs

Hemlock Park

Next steps

Tenders for these two projects will go out early 2022, and we expect to begin construction in Spring 2022, weather permitting.

Has there been any consideration for dog waste? Will Sutera in-ground dog waste units be installed throughout?

Waterloo has so many condos and many of these dwellers have dogs. Waterloo also seriously lacks off leash dog parks. Micro inner urban dog parks are great; Toronto has 70+. Locally, George Lippert Park in Kitchener, is a fine example of one. It is a great way to exercise and socialize your dog and meet your neighbours!
