A pedestrian-first street: Market District
Why a pedestrian-first street?
We are planning to create a pedestrian-first street between the Kitchener Market ION Station and the Kitchener Market. A pedestrian-first space makes it easier to walk to the Market and host events and activities out on the street. It will also support the Market in serving as a community hub for the east end, which residents have told us is a key priority.
Creating people-friendly transportation options and a vibrant economy are items in City of Kitchener's Strategic Plan. Currently, the Kitchener Market uses parts of Eby Street for Saturday market vendors. This reveals one of many possible uses for streets that are oriented around the pedestrian experience. The city's Planning Around Rapid Transit Stations (PARTS) is guiding new developments around the Market. Kitchener City Council also approved plans to convert Cedar Street to a one-way street. This would allow for the addition of separated bike lanes. All these initiatives will change and influence the pedestrian experience.
What can be done to support pedestrians in the Market District? Your feedback will help us develop programming and physical improvement plans, as described in our action plan. That work will start with low-cost and flexible improvements in 2022-2023. Together, we'll create a long-term vision for a pedestrian-first street in the Market District.

Just remember, the current budget does not allow for major construction so ideas that require significant changes to the streetscape will be used to shape a long-term vision of the street.

First thing you need to do is end the street begging at ever Hwy exit and on ramp. It make this city look like Toronto.

Cedar is the better choice
Cedar St is the better choice because it is right there at Market Station. It would also be easier to provide back alley driveways to the houses at Cedar/Charles than to the ones at Eby/Charles if the street goes pedestrian-only.

Covid concerns
I will have to be feeling very comfortable that Covid is over before I really plan on returning to market shopping. I see your plans and look forward to enjoying them one day.

Pedestrian Crossing at Charles/Eby
Charles Street and the ION effectively build a wall in the downtown community. The only legal crossings in this area are at Benton and at Cedar — a distance of 400m. My preferred route to the market would be to cross Charles at Eby, but this is not an option. Even with an "illegal" crossing, the raised curbs make it more challenging and more dangerous if you have a bike, stroller, wheelchair, or push cart.

Censorship by the Bike lane lobby.
I have owned a business and apartments in the down town area for years. Because I criticized the Mayor and the council and the planning department my comment was removed. My businesses have sulfured greatly because of the LRT, pandemic and the future cycling grid have impacted my business severely. My bottom line shows that the hallucination of the active transportation strategy of bike lanes does not bring customers to me. The closing off the streets is another lubricous idea. THIS IS NOT COMMUNIST CHINA where you can censor people because they disagree with you. The planning department is incompetent and does not listen to citizens. They treat you as a business owner tell you your business does not meet the future vision and want to ruin your livelihood and business you have built for years and was thriving. Now I called the Mayor Bike Lane Berry. He does not listen either or does our council. Too bad if you do not like my comments because they are true. I have called him a lot worse on an e-mail exchange.
