What you shared with us about the Prospect Park design concepts

6 November 2025

As you know, the City of Kitchener is introducing stormwater solutions in Prospect Park. This means that changes will be coming to the park, including upgrading park features. Earlier this year, we shared design ideas for Prospect Park in the following ways:

  • Public Open House on June 18, 2025
  • Virtual Open House from May 20 through July 6, 2025

Here is a summary of what we heard from residents, including an infographic. A longer, more detailed report is also available.

Current park uses

Most of the people who took part in the Open House and virtual Open House live near Prospect Park. They said that the main things they did in the park are:

  • Walking or cycling on the trail
  • Enjoying nature
  • Exercising or passing thought the park on the way elsewhere

Feedback on park design options

There were two park designs options presented to the public. Each of the concept designs included a new wet pond to manage stormwater in the southern part of the park. The two concepts were different as they were each designed on a different theme, as follows:

  • Concept One: Active & Play - promotes activity and fitness for all ages. The concept features playgrounds for smaller and older children and a path with outdoor workout equipment around the pond. The design also includes a sports court and large open lawn spaces for less formal play, casual recreation, and community events.
  • Concept Two: Passive & Nature Connections – presents a welcoming community space where people can connect to nature, relax or get together. A key feature is an amphitheatre, which could host community and neighbourhood events. Picnic areas located under trees provide shaded seating for families and friends to enjoy each others company and nature. The open lawn area offers flexibility for play, fitness, or community activities.

Preferred concept design

More people chose Concept One over Concept Two. When asked about specific park features, people:

  • Supported the naturalized landscape and playgrounds in Concept One.
  • Supported the naturalized landscape and pollinator area in Concept Two.
  • Did not support the sports court in Concept One or the amphitheater in Concept Two.

Moving forward, you will have more chances to learn about and share your thoughts on updated design for Prospect Park in the coming months.
