The Region of Waterloo will pilot three different crosswalk safety measures at roundabouts.

The pilot will include adjustments to crosswalks aimed at helping anyone walking or rolling feel more safe. While roundabouts have a good safety record, some people feel less safe at these crossings, especially people with disabilities or people who find it hard to cross quickly.

Three options will be explored at three different locations. Each pilot location will also include improved lighting.

  1. Raised crosswalks: The crosswalk is slightly higher than the road, creating a smoother and more visible crossing experience for pedestrians and making drivers slow down.
Pilot location: Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road

  2. Flashing lights: Button-activated bright flashing lights that alert road users when someone is crossing.
Pilot location: Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North

  3. Flashing lights and raised crosswalks: A combination of both button-activated flashing lights and raised crosswalks.
Pilot location: Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard

The locations for the Roundabout Pedestrian Safety Pilot Project were chosen based on pedestrian volumes, collision history, having multiple lanes and geographic distribution. We have already begun collecting data at the three pilot locations and will continue during the one-year pilot.

Construction is planned between July and September. For more details on construction, detours and schedule visit the Region of Waterloo’s Construction page.

A final report from the pilot will be shared with Regional Council in 2026 with recommendations about whether crosswalk improvements should be added to new or existing roundabouts.

To help inform the report, tell us about your experiences using the roundabouts and their crossings. A survey will be available following construction of the project.

The project responds to Regional Council direction to undertake work to improve pedestrian safety. It also furthers the Region’s strategic priority of Climate Aligned Growth.
