This project is now complete. The separated bike lanes were installed in the summer of 2019. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that began early in 2020, travel patterns were significantly changed for all modes of travel. This made it very difficult to reasonably compare the data from before and after the installation or make recommendations. As a result, no final report will be made. Preliminary data did show a declining trend in collisions and improvements in safety for all road users. City staff will continue to monitor the bike lane pilot and collect data for future consideration. If you have any questions, please contact Darren Kropf, Manager of Active Transportation and Development, at Darren.Kropf@kitchener.ca or 519-741-2200 ext. 7314

The City of Kitchener has installed 5km of separated bike lanes on Queen’s Blvd, Belmont Ave, and Water St. The bike lanes are a pilot project approved by Council in early 2019 aimed to calm traffic, make roadways safer for all users, and to understand the full life cycle costs for separated bike lanes of this type.

We have been monitoring and evaluating how the new roadway design is performing, and will continue to do so. Based on our evaluations and your feedback, we will make recommendations on the future of separated bike lanes in Kitchener.
