With your help, we developed a new Sewer Use By-law to update and consolidate the Sanitary Use By-law and the Connections to Services By-laws, which were published in 1973.
The revised by-law:
- Addresses the significant changes in Wilmot's infrastructure over the past 50 years
- Ensures we are meeting current requirements and regulations
- Allows for economical construction, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of our sanitary network
Highlights of the by-law
The by-law includes requirements to:
- No longer permit new septic systems where a municipal system exists
- Rehabilitate or replace sanitary laterals where an existing building has been demolished
- Include inspection maintenance holes on all industrial, institutional and multi-family dwellings to allow for effluent monitoring
- Have storm laterals either indirectly connected to the storm system or have back-flow prevention devices added to the storm lateral during the construction of homes or subdivisions to prevent damages due to sewer surcharges
- Require the disconnect of downspouts, foundation drains and/or sump pumps presently connected to the sanitary sewer system
These changes are intended to keep the sanitary sewer system free of obstructions and to minimize inflow and infiltration.
