Introduction

The City of Waterloo is working in partnership with the Region of Waterloo to install a multi-use path (MUP) along the south side of University Avenue East from Northfield Drive East to approximately 500m West.

This project will provide a separated cycling lane as well as pedestrian space to use along this corridor. Currently there is no infrastructure for users in this corridor. This proposed path will connect with the recently installed multi-use path on Northfield Dr. E. Follow this page for updates on the design and construction of this project.

Phase 1 and 2

The project will be broken into two phases. Phase 1 will be from Northfield Dr. E. to approximately 500m west of the University Ave. and Northfield Dr. intersection. Phase 1 is being designed in 2026 and scheduled for construction in 2027.

Phase 2 will connect from the end of Phase 1 to Bridge St. E. and continue down Bridge St. E. back to Northfield Dr. along the east side of the road. Phase 2 has no definitive timeline for design or construction, but would be anticipated to be completed sometime after 2028.

Based on the recommendations of the City's Transportation Master Plan, and other supporting policies like the City’s Sidewalk Policy, University Ave. E. cycling infrastructure along the corridor should be separated from traffic for safety. This would support increased active use and provide choice in how people travel.
