Eliminating temptation to speed starts with better road design!

I have noticed here in North America it is easy to speed on local roads and arterials consistently because the roads/right-of-ways are designed to be easy for drivers to be less attentive. The roads and lanes are too wide where it makes the driver feel safer speeding where clearly it becomes a threat to pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles. The lane width standards here are too wide at 3.5m where in Europe it is 3 or 2.8 for local roads and arterials. The 3.5m width is based off of 1950s highways standards that was brought into city road design. Also right-of-ways are too wide with generous boulevards and excessive building setbacks giving a sense of less worry to drive fast in neighbourhood. Reducing legal speed limits and adding other barrier measure can only go so far but reducing the design speed can make long lasting change making drivers to put more attention to be aware of their surroundings. Below is a YouTube link to explain. Reducing road/lane widths should be done across the whole Region. Speeding has been getting worse over the years and real change comes with updating how we design our streets to the 21st century.
