Introduction
We are upgrading a section of the Waterloop Trail to better serve pedestrians, cyclists and other active modes of transportation by making a key connection in the City’s off-road trail network. Follow this page for ongoing project updates on design and construction.
The Waterloop pathway system was identified through Waterloo's Transportation Master Plan for upgrades because of its proximity to the community center; library; schools; and links to existing area multi-use-paths and on-road bike lanes plus connections to ION stations.

- Upgrade the stone dust trail with asphalt to enhance accessibility and improved drainage.
- Increase the trail width to 3 metres to accommodate all modes of active transportation.
- Provide pedestrian scale lighting for a safer environment outside of daylight hours.
- Remove barriers affecting accessibility.
- Provide a trail link that will be maintained and available all year round.
The project has two parts. Part one is upgrading a section of the existing trail. Part two is removing some existing trail and bridges and realigning a portion of the trail.
This includes:
- Replacing approximately 230m of stone dust trail with asphalt between Parkside Drive and Old Albert Street (behind the Albert McCormick Community Center).
- Removing approximately 200m of stone dust trail and 2 pedestrian bridges.
- Creating a new asphalt trail alignment north of 525 Albert Street.
- Converting approximately 75m of sidewalk to a multi-use-path along Albert Street to connect active users to the existing pedestrian island.
