Route 1 update – and onward to Route 2! Share your feedback until Jan. 31

12 January 2026

You may have noticed signs being installed between The Boardwalk and Downtown Kitchener. We’re almost done Route 1! Due to the early winter, some aspects of Route 1 have been deferred to the spring. The full route will be open to users in the spring. Stay tuned for information on an official opening to celebrate this occasion.

Route 2 planning underway

We’re excited to announce plans for GREEN Route 2: Stanley Park – Downtown Kitchener – Uptown Waterloo. Route 2 will be built in 2026.

Community feedback recommended the Spurline Trail become part of this route, so city staff extended Route 2 to include the section between Downtown and Uptown. Major destinations between Stanley Park, Downtown and Uptown include Dom Cardillo Trail, Stanley Park Mall and GRT Station, Centre in the Square, Kitchener GO/VIA station and Spurline Trail.

Please see the map below for the proposed Route 2. Along with consistent wayfinding for its entirety, this new route will see trail upgrades to the Expressway Trail, parts of the Dom Cardillo Trail and Spurline Trail crossings. To prioritize a route that meets the needs of all ages and abilities, there will be a section that separates pedestrians and cyclists:

  • Pedestrians would take the sidewalk along Ottawa Street North between Franklin Street North and Nottingham Avenue
  • Cyclists would take the low volume, low speed streets on Dreger Avenue and Graber Place, and then use the trail to cross Ottawa Street North and continue along Nottingham Ave. This avoids asking cyclists to use painted bike lanes on the high traffic regional road of Ottawa Street North.
