What to expect

Work hours

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Weekend work may occasionally be required but is expected to be limited. Work is pre-approved on Saturdays and Sundays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Restoration

The construction work area will be restored with sod, concrete and/or asphalt where required. Interlocking brick, flagstone on a granular base, and similar features removed during construction will be replaced.

Sod 60-day placement limited warranty end date: May 12, 2027

The contractor is responsible for the following items during the first 60 days after sod placement:

  • Installation of topsoil and sod, including rolling the sod
  • Watering the sod immediately after placement and throughout the 60-day warranty period
  • Completing the first cut of the sod within 14 days of placement

The project team will complete an inspection just before the end of the 60-day warranty period.

Contractor watering truck

The contractor is responsible for watering newly placed sod during the first 60 days after installation, typically using a water truck. Vehicles parked on the street can limit access to boulevard areas and make watering more difficult. Residents are kindly asked to limit on-street parking after sod has been placed.

Winter dormant period

Depending on the time of year the sod is placed, there is a winter dormant period during which the 60-day warranty period is suspended. This suspension occurs from November 15 to April 15, inclusive. The warranty period resumes after the dormant period ends. The warranty end date shown above already accounts for this dormant period.

Resident watering

We encourage residents and property owners to continue watering throughout the sod warranty period and after the sod has been accepted, while following the Region of Waterloo Water Conservation By-law. Working together on watering will help the sod establish and thrive.

Lawn mowing and grass cutting

Aside from the contractor's first cut within 14 days of sod placement, it is the responsibility of the resident, business owner or property owner to maintain the grass.

Grass should be kept at a height of 75 mm (3 inches) or taller. Raising mower blades to their highest practical setting helps new sod establish and improves its chances of surviving hot and dry weather over the next several years. Cutting the grass too short will immediately void the sod warranty.

Fertilizer, aeration and overseeding

In the spring following installation, the contractor is responsible for fertilizing, aerating and overseeding newly sodded areas installed during the previous construction season.

Sod inspection and handover

The City will inspect the condition of the newly sodded areas at the end of the warranty period. The contractor will be required to replace any deteriorated sod identified during the inspection.

Once the inspection is complete and any required replacements have been made, responsibility for ongoing care and maintenance will be handed over to the resident, business owner or property owner.

For sod care and maintenance best practices, visit the Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario website.
