What We Heard: Francis Green

14 May 2026

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on the future of Francis Green. Your input has helped us understand what people value most in this small downtown space.

What we heard

Across all engagement, we heard strong support for keeping the park green, shaded, and welcoming. Participants emphasized protecting existing trees, adding more natural shade, and using wood, stone, and other natural materials. Comfortable seating – especially in shaded, quiet areas – was a high priority, along with warm lighting and clear sightlines to support a sense of safety.

Feedback on play was mixed. Some supported small, sculptural, or natural play elements. Others felt the park is too small or too close to traffic for traditional play, noting it is used mostly by adults, seniors, office workers, and people passing through.

When reviewing the two design concepts, participants noted clear strengths and concerns. Many liked the first concept’s modern sculptural elements and unique lighting, but felt it appeared too industrial and lacked greenery. The second concept was appreciated for its trees, natural feel, and comfortable character, though some felt that additional play or pathways could reduce usable green space.

Overall, people responded most positively to natural, shaded, and simple design features, and emphasized that Francis Green should remain a calm, uncluttered place to relax in the heart of downtown.

About the final design

The final concept design reflects this strong community support for a greener, more natural space. It includes more tree planting, mounded lawn areas, a retained tree to increase shade and comfort, along with natural materials to soften the overall look.

Seating has been expanded with a mix of different benches, and tables, including the addition of a pergola shade feature. A small, integrated play feature has been included, designed to fit the park’s size without taking away from green space.

Lighting and sightlines have been improved to support a sense of safety, while existing industrial artifacts will be preserved and thoughtfully incorporated. Overall, the design creates a simple, shaded, and welcoming place to relax in the heart of downtown.
