New environmental stewardship volunteer program launched

14 April 2026

Earlier this year, residents were invited to share their feedback and ideas about KNAP programs through an online survey. We heard a lot of interest in learning‑focused and hands‑on topics, plus stewardship and conservation activities.

In response, we've just launched a new environmental restoration program: the Kitchener Nature Stewards. Volunteers will gain hands-on field experience with ecological stewardship and restoration. The initial work will focus on identifying and managing invasive plant species. No prior experience is necessary, so this opportunity is perfect for residents looking to develop or grow their skills.

The program is recruiting for two roles:

  • Individual Stewards, aged 14 and up
  • Lead Stewards aged 18 and up.

You must be available to volunteer for a minimum of 5 hours per year. Volunteer activities will take place outdoors. You should be able to bend, kneel, sit and stand for long periods, and may be required to lift up to 20 pounds. Students are eligible for volunteer hours.

Interested volunteers can apply to join until Friday, April 24.
