McLennan-Lions Master Plan: What we heard

August 24, 2026

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first phase of engagement for the McLennan-Lions Master Plan.

Between May 12 and July 25, 2026, residents shared feedback online through Engage Kitchener and at community events, park pop-ups, and engagement sessions held at McLennan Park, Lions Park, Chandler Mowat Community Centre, and Country Hills Community Centre.

Through these conversations, staff connected with 380 residents and collected over 1,700 comments about what works well, what could be improved, and what they would like to see in the future at both parks.

What we heard

Recreation remains a top priority

Residents expressed strong support for maintaining the recreation-focused identity of both parks. Frequently mentioned amenities included playgrounds, splash pads, trails, sports fields, the bike park, skate park, basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, and Lions Arena.

More shade and natural spaces

Participants consistently requested more trees and shaded seating through both parks, including the McLennan Dog Park. Picnic shelters, naturalized areas, pollinator gardens, and protection of existing green spaces were also prioritized by residents.

Accessibility improvements are needed

Residents identified opportunities to improve pathways, access to McLennan Hill, seating, washrooms, handrails, and accessible surfacing throughout both parks and the McLennan Dog Park.

Washrooms and amenities matter

Improved washroom facilities were among the most common requests. Residents also highlighted the need for additional visitor amenities and comfortable places to rest and gather.

Parks bring people together

Both parks are valued as community gathering places. Residents expressed interest in more picnic areas, shaded seating, community events, and outdoor programming in the parks.

Signature features should be preserved

McLennan Hill was frequently praised for its views, trails, tobogganing opportunities, and bike park. Lions Park was recognized as an important community hub that combines recreation, sports, programming, and social activities in one location.

What we're taking away

Residents strongly support maintaining the recreational focus of both parks while investing in:

  • Accessibility improvements
  • Shade and tree planting
  • Improved washrooms and amenities
  • Trails and seating
  • Natural areas and environmental features
  • Community gathering spaces
  • Recreation and play opportunities for all ages

What's next?

Feedback gathered through public engagement, together with technical review and planning considerations, will be used to develop draft concepts for both parks.

These concepts will be shared with the public during the next stage of engagement. These will help guide improvements and investments in McLennan Park and Lions Park over the next ten years, while reflecting the vision shared by residents and City staff.

Thank you to everyone who shared their ideas and experiences. Your feedback is helping shape the future of these important community parks.
