Notice of Special Meeting of Council

You are invited to attend a Special Meeting of Council on Monday November 17, 2025 at 7:00pm. This Special Meeting is being held at the early stages of preparation of a new Official Plan for the Township of Wilmot in accordance with Section 26 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990, as amended. Public input is being sought to inform Council and the Project Team of community priorities that should be considered through the development of Wilmot’s new Official Plan.

WHAT IS AN OFFICIAL PLAN?

An Official Plan is a document that guides and shapes the future of a community by identifying where, and under what circumstances, specific types of land uses can be located within the Township’s Municipal Boundary. An Official Plan applies to all lands within the Township. The purpose of the Official Plan is to direct development in a way that makes efficient use of land and infrastructure, creates attractive and livable communities with a variety of housing options, and protects the Township’s cultural and natural heritage and agricultural lands.

WHY DOES WILMOT NEED A NEW OFFICIAL PLAN?

The Township’s current Official Plan was approved in 2004. It was updated in 2017 with approval in 2019. The new Official Plan will build on the Township’s long-term vision for growth in the community to the year 2051.

As of January 1, 2025, the Region of Waterloo is an upper-tier municipality without planning responsibilities. The Region’s Official Plan has become the responsibility of the Township as it applies to lands in Wilmot. Wilmot’s new Official Plan will replace the existing Township and Regional Official Plans with one document and align with the new 2024 Provincial Planning Statement.
