In the Fairway area, there are two sections of Wilson Avenue where we are making improvements:

  • For the section from Fairway Road to Goodrich Drive, there is only one design option.
  • For the section from Traynor Avenue to Fairway Road, we are looking for your feedback on two design options.

Fairway area

  • In 2024, Fairway ION Station was the 3rd busiest Neuron e-scooter station in Kitchener.
  • Fairway/Vanier neighborhood has double the transit and walking mode shares compared to the rest of Kitchener.
  • Most transit users arrive to stations by foot or bike, not by car.
  • Data collected at the Wilson/Fairway intersection show a high volume of pedestrians, especially on weekday evenings.
  • Data collected in 2025 shows that 85% people using bicycles and e-scooters are on the sidewalk on Wilson Avenue between the transit station and Fairway Road, rather than the road.

Future Growth Traffic Study

A Future Growth Traffic Study was done to assess future growth conditions in the area and test options with this growth in mind.

It was determined:

  • At Wilson Avenue/Fairway Road, a longer left-hand turn lane on the southbound approach will reduce delay and ensure no traffic back up over the LRT tracks, which causes transit delays and dangerous situations for vehicles. Also, the planned River Road extension will shift much of the industrial traffic away from the Fairway Rd intersection.
  • At Wilson Avenue/Kingsway Drive, there are no changes to traffic capacity.
  • At Wilson Avenue/Traynor Avenue, removing the left turning lanes would not have a significant impact on traffic operations.

  • Only one option is proposed for this section.
  • The proposed design balances the needs of all road users.
  • Use the slider to compare the current condition and the proposed changes.
Current Proposed
  • Current condition

    • Options are limited by constrained space on the bridge over the rail-line
  • Proposed changes

    • The multi-use path creates new space for pedestrians and cyclists, connecting to the new multi-use path on the east side at Goodrich Drive
    • Physically separated with concrete jersey barriers
    • One lane on the west side is supported by traffic volume data

  • Two options are being proposed in this area.
  • Public feedback will help to guide staff on the preferred direction.

Current condition

Current conditions on Wilson at Fairway Road and Trayor Avenue
  • A multi-use path was considered but pedestrian volumes are too high to support shared space here.

Option A

Preferred Option A: Single direction cycle track with sidewalk

Single direction cycle track with sidewalk
  • Separated bike lanes on either side of Wilson will connect into the new bike lanes on Wilson north of Traynor Avenue.
  • Additional space in the boulevard would allow for new plantings, increasing the tree canopy in the area.

Option B

Alternative Option B: Two-way cycle tracks

Two-way cycle tracks
  • Bi-directional 3m cycle tracks on east side of Wilson Avenue.
  • Bi-directional infrastructure introduces additional safety risks in a higher traffic arterial like Wilson Avenue.
  • Would not provide cycling access to destinations on west side of Wilson Avenue.

Options analysis

We assessed Wilson Avenue's current condition and both design options based on these criteria:

  • Pedestrian safety and comfort
  • Cyclist safety and comfort
  • Motor vehicle delays
  • Transit impacts
  • Impact to trees
Table including options analysis
  • Green = Excellent result
  • Yellow = Good result
  • Orange = Fair result
  • Red = Poor result

Current condition

  • Pedestrian safety and comfort: Excellent
  • Cyclist safety and comfort: Poor
  • Motor vehicle delays: Fair
  • Transit impacts: Excellent
  • Impact to trees: Excellent

Preferred Option A: Single direction cycle tracks with sidewalks

  • Pedestrian safety and comfort: Excellent
  • Cyclist safety and comfort: Excellent
  • Motor vehicle delays: Fair
  • Transit impacts: Good
  • Impact to trees: Good

Alternative Option B: Two-way cycle tracks

  • Pedestrian safety and comfort: Excellent
  • Cyclist safety and comfort: Good
