This project aims to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in Kitchener. It will fill key gaps in the city’s trail network, linking the Iron Horse Trail to the TransCanada Trail on Wilson Avenue. It will also create a safer, more accessible route for people of all ages and abilities.

This corridor was identified as a top priority in the City’s Cycling and Trails Master Plan, supported by feedback from over 3,000 residents. It’s also part of the City’s Strategic Planto build city-wide active transportation routes that connect major neighbourhoods with transit, jobs, services, and downtown.

Construction for Floral Crescent is expected during the 2026 construction season. Construction on Wilson Avenue has not yet been scheduled, but is expected to begin sometime after 2027.

Why it matters

  • Better connections: The new infrastructure will link Downtown Kitchener to the Rockway, Fairway/Vanier, and Trillium Industrial areas, with future extensions to Conestoga College.
  • Safe and comfortable travel: Designed for people who want to walk or cycle more but don’t feel safe sharing the road with vehicles.
  • Support for growth: This project complements the Growing Together East initiative, which will bring 35,000 new homes to nearby neighbourhoods. Improved transportation options will help residents move around easily as the community grows.

Proposed improvements

These are the improvements we are making, both neighbourhood-specific and overall.
  • A multi-use path on Floral Crescent between Preston Street and Rockway Drive.
  • Sharrows (shared lane markings) on Floral between Doon Road and Dixon Street.
  • Separated, bi-directional cycle lanes on Dixon and Eckert Streets connecting to the trail south of the highway.
  • Separated, raised cycle track on Wilson Avenue, continuing from Traynor Avenue to Fairway Road South.
  • A multi-use path on Wilson Avenue between Fairway Road South and Goodrich Drive.
  • 1 km of new pedestrian routes
  • 2.3 km of new or upgraded cycling routes
  • New public art through Kitchener’s 1% for art program
  • Traffic improvements at the Wilson Avenue and Fairway Road intersection

How to get involved

We are consulting residents on the proposed designs for Floral Crescent and Wilson Avenue. Ask questions and share your thoughts at an upcoming meeting. Your feedback will help shape the final designs that will be built.
