Rockway Fairway Transportation Connections: Staff recommendations

July 17, 2026

Project background

Identified as a top priority in the City’s Cycling and Trails Master Plan, this project aims to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in Kitchener by filling key gaps in the City’s trail network and create a safer, more accessible route for people of all ages and abilities. It is also part of the City’s Strategic Plan to build city-wide active transportation routes that connect neighbourhoods with transit, jobs, services and downtown.

Engagement summary

There have been several opportunities for community engagement, which occurred in fall 2025. In total, 410 people were engaged through in-person meetings, online surveys and pop-up engagements.

The full "What We Heard" report can be found on the project page.

Recommendations

Alternatives were considered at earlier stages of design and community engagement. Based on community feedback and project constraints staff recommend:

  • Extending the Iron Horse Trail to Rockway Drive;
  • Installing wayfinding, sharrows and two speed humps on Floral Crescent;
  • Deferring the Dixon St and Eckert St section to the 2029 street reconstruction, with the intention of installing boulevard multi-use trails at that time; and,
  • Installing unidirectional cycle tracks adjacent to the sidewalks on each side of Wilson Av from Fairlawn Rd up to the Traynor Trail, leading into Fairway Station.
