What we learned and what's next

25 July 2025

Through various pop-up events, school visits, conversations with residents and digital feedback collected through this project page, close to 300 community members shared their thoughts on reimagining St. Moritz Park.

What we learned:

  • Residents enjoy community spaces in the park, including the community garden, ice rink, open areas and fields.
  • Many also appreciate the park’s natural spaces and passive activities, such as walking and observing the plants and animals.
  • There are maintenance concerns in the park, particularly poor drainage that leaves the field muddy, which is especially a concern for those who use the park as part of their route to school.
  • When thinking about the future of the park, there was interest in features including a new playground, water play areas, courts and sport spaces, event spaces, shade and washrooms.
  • Many residents also feel strongly about enhancing the park’s natural character, such as through pollinator gardens, native planting and new trees.

How this will be used:

The feedback we’ve gathered so far will help inform the initial designs for the future St. Moritz Park, such as the priorities for new amenities, layout of the space and design features. We will aim to reflect the balance between preserving nature and adding play and gathering opportunities.

What we learned and can’t use:

  • Several residents suggested having an off-leash dog park at St. Moritz Park, which is not being considered due to the proximity to the new Copper Street Dog Park.
  • Several residents expressed support for having a pool at St. Moritz Park, which is not being considered as part of the scope of this project. However, we have noted the importance of having water play features in the park.
  • We also learned about concerns related to path connections within St. Moritz Park to other nearby trails. These comments have been noted and passed to the city’s active transportation team as they fall outside the scope of this project.

What’s next:

Next, we’ll put together a design brief that reflects what we learned from the community. Using that brief, we’ll create two early design options for the park. We’ll then share those two options with the community and ask for more feedback through events and other outreach.
