We want to hear from residents who participate in our recreation and leisure programs...and those who don't!

We want to make our programs available to as wide a range of people as possible, making sure they are welcoming and inclusive. Whether you are a regular participant in our programs or have not used them before, we want to know what you think! Your input will help us make sure the programs we offer reflect the diverse interests and needs of Waterloo residents.

In 2020 Community Services staff completed an internal review of recreation and leisure programs. Incorporating feedback from the WMRC (Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex) Expansion Needs Assessment and Feasibility Study, as well as a recent Older Adult Strategy, we made some changes to support a broader range of programming. What other changes are needed?

We are also working on an Indoor Community Spaces Master Plan, to better understand how spaces such as meeting rooms, event spaces, gymnasiums and ice pads are currently used and how they can be enhanced to better serve our growing population. That plan will support making city facilities more usable, welcoming, inclusive and environmentally friendly. Your feedback on this survey will help us make ongoing adjustments to our programs based on those same values.

Please read the suggestion of establishing a Waterloo Seniors Association & Social Club, a dedicated organization to promote active & social activities that apply to a broad cross-section of our growing/populated senior community. This group could be supported by a dedicated senior committee specific to the needs & wants of our 55plus population. Thank you Kent Williams

I suggest the formation of a Waterloo Seniors Association & Social Club that would encourage all seniors to become involved both actively & socially. Waterloo’s indoor & outdoor facilities are second to none but lack imagination & innovation when it comes to a dedicated 55plus age group. It would help if a senior association were formed to specifically address the senior population - Kitchener offers similar senior groups via their Rockway Centre & various dedicated senior groups at their community centers. There is definite need in Waterloo particularly for new senior retired residents who move into our city & are without family, friends or relatives. This type of organization would allow the opportunity to become socially involved to meet new friends & acquaintances. The retired senior population is a growing segment of our community - Kent Williams

Good afternoon, I have been a resident of Waterloo pretty much my whole life, I had read at one of the arenas that there was free skating at Pillars (Rim Park) on Sunday at noon, my wife and I were going to take our grand daughter skating only to find out that without registering we could not attend this event, imagine the disappointment we had to share with our grand daughter that this event was full (120 people) almost as fast as it was posted. What is going on with this city? What ever happened to public skating at a reasonable time ? Why do we need to pre- register every event? I feel as a member of this community that a lot of people such as ourselves that do not frequent the arenas miss out on special events. What can your team do to change operations to allow easier access to public events? Just asking, I am sure we are not the only grand parents in this position. Please reply with any answer that does not include how COVID has changed the way community members are served. Thank You Tom Taylor

The lack of bus service to The Rec Centre is a major hindrance for older adults who do not have a vehicle .It is too far for many older people to walk from Erb St or from Westmount whether it is summer or winter. For those using a walker it is very discouraging. Since closing so many of the senior centres where there was bus service this is discouraging to not have bus service.
During public meetings during the planning stages this need for bus service has been a constant plea. Thus far this need has nor been addressed.

Re access to the pool. There have been repeated requests for an accessibility lift for entering and exiting the pool. During the early aquafit classes there is a person who needs help from fellow swimmers to climb the ladder and fellow swimmers help boost this person up the ladder This is unacceptable .We have been told that there arent funds for such a lift. This too is unacceptable

I'm looking for opportunities for a women 55+ to play ice hockey. I haven't tried the drop in at RIM as I've heard it is mostly younger people. I can't keep up with them. What are my options?

Went to three community centers looking for space to do Nerf battles and was told they don't allow Nerf blasters and that gym space was fully booked.

I would like to suggest establishing a possible partnership with our local Senior Games Association.
There purpose would be an added usage of our Waterloo Recreation facilities both at the Rec. centre & Rim.
The Senior Games are held regionally, provincially & nationally & with a partnership arrangement have the potential to attract senior athletes from across the province & also nationally that could experience our first class facilities & all our city & region have to offer. Kent Williams
