Construction update for Westwood Drive

October 7, 2026

The City of Kitchener is continuing Phase 1 of the Westwood Drive road reconstruction, extending from Westmount Road to about 150 metres west of Huntington Place. Phase 1 will be completed in two stages:

  • Phase 1 - Stage 1: Westmount Road to Inwood Drive
  • Phase 1 - Stage 2: Inwood Drive to the second leg of Westwood Crescent

The general contractor, Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. (GIP), and its subcontractors began surface work on September 30, 2026. Surface work includes:

  • installation of concrete curbs and gutters
  • construction of concrete sidewalks and driveway ramps
  • paving of roads and driveways
  • placement of topsoil and sod to restore disturbed areas

This work is part of the Council-approved Capital Works Program, which helps renew aging roads, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, watermains and sidewalks to meet current and future needs.

Property access will be affected during surface construction. More information is provided below.

What to expect

Work hours

Construction will typically take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Occasionally, work may also be required on weekends. Weekend work is pre-approved between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., but is not expected to occur frequently.

Driveway access during surface work

You may not be able to use your driveway for approximately 3 to 5 weeks while crews install curbs, sidewalks, driveway ramps and the final layer of asphalt.

The length of time may vary depending on:

  • construction progress
  • the time needed for concrete to cure and reach full strength
  • subcontractor scheduling
  • weather and other unexpected conditions

Road and sidewalk access

To complete the work safely, temporary road and sidewalk restrictions will be in place throughout the construction area.

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.

Temporary wooden walkways may be installed to help people safely access their properties while concrete cures.

Driveway access

The contractor will notify you before driveway access is restricted. Due to the nature of the work, driveway access may not be available at all times.

During reconstruction, temporary parking permits will be provided when driveway access is unavailable. These permits allow affected residents to park on designated streets for longer than three hours and overnight.

The site inspector will distribute the permits. Typically, two permits are provided per property. If you require additional permits, please contact the site inspector.

Please display the permit on your dashboard and park only in approved locations. Vehicles must not interfere with construction operations.

We work closely with Bylaw Enforcement to ensure residents affected by construction are aware of the temporary parking arrangements. Parking and safety regulations will continue to be enforced.

Accessible accommodation

The City's contractor is required to maintain safe and accessible walkways and entrances throughout construction.

Any temporary disruptions will be communicated as soon as possible. If you experience an access issue or require accommodation, please contact the person listed below.

Residents who require accommodation, such as level entry access or additional notice before disruptions, should contact the Project Manager to discuss their needs and make arrangements during construction.

On-site communication

At times, the contractor may need to speak with residents about construction activities. This may include:

  • driveway access
  • water shut-offs
  • pre-construction inspections
  • restoration work, such as landscaping or reinstalling pavers

Contractor staff can be identified by their high-visibility, company-branded clothing.

If you need assistance on site, please ask to speak with the Site Inspector.

Garbage and recycling

Please place garbage, recycling and green bin materials at the curb before 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

If needed, the contractor will move bins to an accessible collection location and return them as soon as possible after collection.

Please label all bins with your municipal address.

Restoration

Areas affected by construction will be restored with sod, concrete and/or asphalt as required.

Interlocking brick, flagstone on a granular base and similar features removed during construction will be reinstated.

Additional information about sod installation and maintenance will be provided once sod has been placed.

Parking

This project will affect on-street parking.

Parking is not permitted within active construction zones, as space is needed for construction equipment, materials and safe work operations.

If a parked vehicle is preventing construction work from proceeding, it may be relocated at no cost to the owner.

To report a parking enforcement issue, please call 519-741-2345.

Moving in/out and deliveries

Every effort will be made to accommodate scheduled moves and deliveries.

If you are planning a move or expecting a large delivery, please contact the Site Inspector in advance so arrangements can be made where possible.

Site Inspector

If you have questions about construction activities or experience an issue on site, please contact the Site Inspector.

The Site Inspector represents the City on site and is available daily during construction. They can be identified by a white hard hat displaying the consulting firm's logo.
