The Region of Waterloo owns and manages more than 2,700 affordable rental units in the region’s cities and townships through Waterloo Region Housing (WRH).

As part of the WRH Revitalization Plan approved by Regional Council, many of these buildings are being redeveloped to create more affordable housing options. They offer a mix of rent levels. This webpage provides information on units available under median market rent. Rental rates will differ depending on the building and unit size.

What is Median Market Rent (MMR)?

Median market rent is the middle rental price for homes in an area. For example, if five apartments rent between $1,000 and $1,400, the median market rent is $1,200.

Why do we offer MMR units?

We know many people need homes that are much more affordable than market rent, and building deeply affordable homes remains a priority. There are also people who do not qualify for lower income rentals but cannot afford today's high market rates.

What other options are there for people who need deeply affordable rental units?

There are deeply affordable rental units offered at these buildings as well, but those are filled through a different process. More information on these programs is available on the Community Housing Access Centre webpage.
