The Region’s contractor Navacon Construction Inc. has temporarily closed King Street to eastbound traffic between Lowther Street and Bishop Street to safely install the watermain and rebuild the road as quickly as possible. One-way traffic in the westbound direction will continue to be permitted during this stage of the work. The Region will provide a signed detour route for eastbound traffic (including heavy trucks) using Eagle Street, Hespeler Road and Bishop Street. View the Detour Map here.

King Street is tentatively expected to re-open on or around December 21, weather permitting. Crews are working hard to complete the remaining road works and get the street opened.

Access to businesses and residential properties on both sides of King Street will be maintained within the closure limits, but traffic will only be permitted to travel in the westbound direction.

Upon starting watermain installation, we uncovered an old brick and stone water tunnel

The inside of the tunnel was mostly dry and still very strong

Our project archaeologist fully documented the tunnel since we need to remove it to complete the watermain replacement.

Construction of King Street is progressing well. Stages 1 and 2 (Dover Street to Laurel Street) are nearing completion. Our contractor has almost completed the first half of Stage 3 (Laurel Street to Montrose Street).

Throughout the project, road reconstruction has included the removal of the abandoned streetcar rail ties which are embedded in concrete and buried beneath the existing asphalt. Once Stage 3 work began, exposure of the rail ties revealed that their location, combined with the narrow road corridor in the section between Laurel Street and Bishop Street, would not allow for their safe removal while maintaining two-way traffic as planned.

Alternate scenarios for maintaining traffic in two directions have been explored, but the required temporary works associated with these options would extend the project timeline, pushing more work into 2021, and delaying completion by several months. After careful consideration, the project team has determined that it is necessary to temporarily close one lane of traffic to allow the work to proceed safely while maintaining the current schedule.
