Go behind the scenes at Greenbrook! Tour the pump room and water treatment area, and learn how water in aquifers deep underground – the source of Waterloo Region’s water – gets to your kitchen tap. Outdoors (weather permitting), find out all about groundwater and supply wells. Public water service in Berlin/Kitchener began 130 years ago, when the first pump house on this site drew from a pond that had once powered a sawmill. It became Berlin’s first public utility when the town acquired the facility. Wells replaced the surface water in 1899. Today Greenbrook is a pump house and former engine house joined to water treatment and filtration wings. The 1930 yellow-brick industrial façade, with its hint of Romanesque Revival, was respected by sympathetic, modern additions. Ample green space and mature trees, along with the building’s low profile, create an excellent landscape.
